5 Questions Critical Questions You Should Ask.

As any home owner knows, having a beautiful, break-taking lawn or landscape can add significant value to any home.  Whether it be an actual dollar value, or a value that’s measured in the amount of enjoyment you receive admiring your beautiful landscape while spending a warm summer’s day lounging on your back porch, there’s no denying the joy it can provide.

However, as any smart home owner also knows, having a beautiful, breath-taking lawn doesn’t just happen over night.  Nor does it happen without considerable hard work, effort, and many cases some stress and hassle.  Either by you or by someone else.

Now, if you’re the kind of weekend warrior that takes great pleasure in slaving away your weekends and free nights out in your yard, then you have our respect because you understand very intimately exactly what it takes to bring to life a landscape that can be enjoyed by all who see it.

If, on the other hand, you want the rewards of this beautiful lawn, but don’t have the time, effort, or even the motivation to bring this about yourself, lucky for you there are countless companies available that are more than willing to help make your landscaping dreams a reality.

At the same time, because there are so many choices available to you, it can be a difficult and frustrating process of trying to decide which choice is right for you?  Which service provider really can offer you the beautiful lawn and landscape you want, but without all the hassles, frustrations, and headaches that often go along with ‘outsourcing’ the job.

Fortunately for you, we’ve had the opportunity to work with so many home owners just like you that have had the same concerns and questions. 

And throughout our dealings with our current and past customers, we’ve kept track of these questions.  Mostly as a way to help us provide better service to these existing customers, but also to help educate our potential customers as they search for the right ‘fit’ to handle all their lawn care and landscaping needs.

As we’ve studied these questions and concerns, we’ve identified 7 questions you can AND SHOULD be asking any potential lawn care or landscaping company you hire.  By asking these 5 questions, you’ll gain considerable insight into who the company is, the type of service you can expect to receive, but most importantly, the results you can expect to see from their efforts.

Now, in addition to sharing with you these 5 questions, we’ve also supplied what we consider to be the proper responses.  Having been in this industry for 16 years now, we know what it takes to provide excellent lawn care service.

We would of course LOVE an opportunity to provide you with a beautiful lawn or landscape that compliments your home, but after learning these 5 questions and the answers you should expect to receive, we’ll take pride in knowing you’ll receive excellent service regardless of who provides it.

• Are you properly licensed and insured?

I’ll be perfectly honest with you.  It’s pretty easy to get into the lawn care business.  All it takes is a lawn mower, spare time and the ambition to find some clients.  Let’s face it, ANYONE cut grass.

However, if you’re after a lawn that people admire every time they see it, it takes a lot more than a lawn mower and some spare time.

So, when you hire a company that’s properly licensed and insured, it let’s you know you’re dealing with a company that’s serious about their business. 

In some cases, like a business license through your city or state, getting properly licensed is not a difficult task, but it does require time and money.  In other cases, like specialized licenses for applying pesticides or herbicides, acquiring a license can be a lengthy and difficult process.  Regardless, if someone’s not willing to go through the hassles and make the investment required to operate a legitimate business, what kind of service could you realistically expect to receive.

On top of having the proper registrations and licenses in place, being properly insured is critical for you as the consumer.  If something were to happen on your property and the service provider doesn’t have the proper insurance in place, you could be liable.  What a nightmare!

When you hire a company that cares enough about their customers, you can rest easy knowing you won’t be on the hook if something were to happen while they’re working in your yard.  There’s nothing worse than being responsible for an accident that isn’t your fault.  Don’t put yourself in this position!

Remember, if you truly want a beautiful lawn or landscape without all the hassles and stress, be sure to hire the company that’s gone through the effort and made the investments necessary to operate as a legitimate enterprise.

• Who will be providing the actual service and what are their credentials?

This is another very important question to ask any potential service provider, mostly because you want to be sure only properly trained professionals are working on your lawn. 

Again, because the barrier to entry in this industry is so low, it’s possible to find many unqualified, untrained professionals that are willing to provide service for dirt cheap prices.  Don’t fall into this trap!

As the old saying goes, you definitely get what you pay for.

A quality lawn care service should have employees that are properly trained in all aspects of lawn care, tree care, plant care, and the use of the necessary equipment to bring about the desired results.

Plus, if your service provider is also performing weed control, fertilization, or pest control services that require the use of dangerous chemicals, it’s VERY important that these professionals know the proper amounts and application cycles for the chemicals they’re applying.

Something else you may want to take into consideration is what type of backgrounds the company’s employees might have.  Do they have criminal backgrounds?  Are they the kind of people you need to keep an extra eye on or can you rest easy while on vacation knowing our house is in good hands?

Another big issue in today’s economy is the use of illegal immigrants as employees.  While most of these people are hard working, respectful individuals, many of them are here illegally. 

Now, I’m not one to tell others what their political opinions should be, but you don’t want to contribute to the glut of illegal immigrants in our country, then it’s important to NOT patronize businesses that illegally employee these aliens.

There are numerous programs available that allow companies to hire legal immigrants and here at Maedgen's Lawn Care we strongly encourage you to employ only those companies that respect the laws of our great country in this regard.

Just so you know, all of our employees are properly trained in correct lawn care techniques and methods.  They all have received extensive training on the equipment they use and know exactly what needs to be done to create a beautiful, professional looking lawn and landscape.

Also, every one of our employees is a US Citizen or has the proper documentation required to be and work in this country legally.

Finally, each crew is supervised by a specially trained, extremely knowledgeable foreman that has the knowledge AND authority necessary to see things are done correctly.

• Can you provide referrals?

As you know, most businesses can and will say just about anything to convince you of their ability to provide exceptional service.  In fact, most businesses are experts at saying ‘the right things’ in order to convince potential customers to sign on the dotted line.

But when you ask for referrals, you’re taking control of the message out of the hand of the business and putting it in the hands of a disinterested third party.  Typically, someone that’s already using the service will be very straightforward in letting you know what exactly you can expect from the company you’re looking to hire.

Now, in some cases a business might be just starting out and as a result, they may not have many referrals.  Don’t let this deter you.  In cases like this, simply ask for other ‘proof’ of their abilities.

Things such as ‘Before & After’ photos are an excellent way to judge a company’s ability.  Testimonials from satisfied customers are another great way to tell what kind of company you’re dealing with.

• How will I be able to communicate with you once I’m a customer?

Once you’ve made the decision about who to hire, being able to communicate with that company is CRITICAL to ensuring your landscape turns out just the way you envision.  There’s nothing more frustrating than coming home from work one day to see your bushes trimmed to short, or the grass not cut correctly, or worse, brown spots beginning to appear.

These are all possible scenarios, and while there may be a valid reason for each, it’s important to know you have the ability to find out the exact reasons WHY things are the way they are.

With as many ways of communicating as we have available to us these days, it’s not unreasonable to expect to be able to speak with your lawn care provider at frequent intervals.  At the very least, you should be given a phone number you can call if you have any questions or concerns about the job that’s being done.

Even better, you should have access to an email address or website where you can quickly post you comments or concerns.  In addition, you should expect a response within a few hours, but at most within 1-2 business days.

Finally, the very best solution would be access to your foreman’s cell phone number.  That way, if anything should crop up, you’ll have immediate access to someone that has the ability AND authority to make the necessary changes.

Again, in many cases there are legitimate reasons WHY things are being done they way they are.  But as a homeowner, it’s your right and your prerogative to know exactly the reasons why, so don’t be afraid to exercise this right.

You see, as mentioned previously, there are LOTS of options available to you as a customer.  In fact, I’m almost certain you could get in your car, drive around for 30 minutes and see at least 4-5 different trucks or signs for lawn care or landscaping companies.

So with so many options, how do you decide between the various service providers?  How can you be sure you’re hiring the company that will be meet your objectives and help you create the lush, relaxing outdoor environment you’re after?

By asking this question, you’ll be able to quickly tell if the company you’re considering will be able to meet your expectations.

Now, if your only concern is price and you’re bound and determined to not pay anymore than you absolutely have to, fortunately for you, there are lots of companies willing to oblige.  We’re just not one of them.

You see, you truly do get what you pay for and our business is focused on providing the very best VALUE for the money. 

Don’t Just Hire The First Company You Come Across.  Do Your Homework.

So, before you hire any lawn care or landscaping company, ask them these 5 questions, gauge their responses, and THEN make a decision with confidence.
